Whitman College hosts a two-day International Student Orientation for incoming international students directly prior to the start of general New Student Orientation. International Student Orientation provides new F-1 and J-1 students an opportunity to learn more about Whitman, Walla Walla and the United States, and focuses on topics that are relevant to international students. Participation in International Student Orientation is required for all F-1 and J-1 visa students.

International students should arrive at the Walla Walla Airport on Saturday, August 15. This is to assure that you are well rested before we start our busy programming on Monday. Arriving on Sunday, August 16, is possible in case of delays or other complications.

In August we will collect your travel information. Typically, there are three flights per day landing at the Walla Walla airport but due to the pandemic this number is often updated. All of these flights originate from Seattle. We will help to shuttle you from the airport to your residence when you arrive.

If you are unable to find a suitable flight to Walla Walla on August 15, book one arriving on August 16. If both days are not available, please contact Greg Lecki, Leckige@whitman.edu to review other options.

We will dedicate Monday and Tuesday to workshops, classes, registrations, shopping trips etc. We will plan for some social activities (as permitted) on Wednesday. You will join the general orientation group on Friday, August 21.

Detailed orientation schedule will be posted later this summer.

To plan what you will pack and bring with you to Whitman, please read the advice on what to pack from the Residence Life Office.

Most international students pack lightly and we will help you do some shopping locally during International Student Orientation. Additional shopping trips will be offered during New Student Orientation.

After you check in, orientation staff will guide you to your temporarily assigned room in on-campus housing for the duration of International Student Orientation. You will be provided with linens (bed sheets, pillow, blanket, towel) to use while you are staying in your temporary housing during International Student Orientation. When International Student Orientation concludes, you will move into your regularly assigned room.

The Walla Walla Valley enjoys beautiful landscapes and all four seasons, including cold weather during fall and winter. We encourage you to prepare appropriately for hot and cold weather when considering what you will bring with you to Whitman.
